Road safety and children around school buses is difficult as children are not always aware of their surroundings. Unfortunately children do not always look both ways, stop for oncoming vehicles or to judge distances effectively.
Below are some recommendations for motorists when near school buses, school zones and generally for children anywhere near a road.
- Stay alert and watch for children on the side of the road.
- Drivers, please slow down around school buses. Although speed limits in rural areas are up to 100km/h, that does not mean you must travel at that speed all the time.
- If you see that the lights are flashing on a school bus, this means that children are possibly getting off. Drive so that you can stop suddenly!
- Parents, road safety can be taught at home first. Please help with teaching children to stop at the side of the road, look both ways and only cross with an adult.
- And finally motorists, please ensure that your car is in good working order. Tyres, suspension and brakes can make the difference between stopping in time and a tragic accident, this is your responsibility!
These principles of road safety should be applied at all times, with school holidays fast approaching and warmer weather motorists can expect to see more children near roads. Drive defensively and be prepared for anything that may happen in front of you.
