With Schoolies about to get underway it might be timely to remind parents and guardians that supplying alcohol to an unsupervised minor can land you with a $8,800 fine!
The two offences relate to this:
- If you are an adult who is not responsible for the minor (such as a friend or sibling) and supply alcohol in a private place; or
- If you are a responsible adult who supplies alcohol but then does not responsibly supervise consumption of the alcohol.
A responsible adult is a parent, step-parent, guardian or an adult who has parental right and responsibilities for the minor.
Factors police consider when determining if irresponsible supply has occurred include:
- if the adult is unduly intoxicated
- if the minor is unduly intoxicated
- the age of the minor
- if the minor is consuming alcohol with food
- if the adult is responsibly supervising the minor’s alcohol consumption; and
- quantity of alcohol supplied and period of time over which it was supplied.
So you might want to rethink sending your underage teenager to Schoolies with a week’s supply of alcohol!
