GE DIGITAL CAMERARainy days and grey skies may keep some of us inside. But when out driving on the road vehicles need to be visible! For those who have travelled to Mackay and Moranbah in our police Central region you may have heard or seen the Lights on and Live program. An initiative of the Road Accident Action Group (RAAG) funded by Arrow Energy.

Depending on the age of your vehicle you may have Daytime Running Lights (DRL) activated when the engine is turned on.  The DRL will deactivate when normal headlights are turned on.  For older vehicles consider using low beam headlights to increase your visibility during rainy weather.

Remember offences do occur when High beam headlights and Fog lights are used inappropriately.

High beam headlights

  • A driver must not switch headlights to high beam if another vehicle is closer than 200m in front of the driver’s vehicle.
  • A driver may flash the headlights briefly before overtaking another vehicle.
  • Drivers must ensure that they do not dazzle other road users.

Sections 218 and 219 of the Queensland Road Rules apply.

Fog lights

  • A driver can only use front or rear fog lights if it is difficult to see other vehicles or objects due to poor weather conditions (for example, heavy rain or fog).
  • Fog lights cannot be used in clear weather conditions, whether it is day or night.

Section 217 of the Queensland Road Rules apply.
