The recent armed robberies are a timely reminder for business owners to review their security protocols. In particular:
- review staff procedures and training in the event of an armed robbery;
- check all security systems and ensure alarms and CCTV is operational and recording;
- test duress alarms and review staff cash handling/banking procedures;
- use well signed, time delay safes, ensuring offenders can see the signage advising that the safe is unable to be opened without delay (only minimal cash should be kept on premises);
- if an offence occurs – preserve the crime scene until police arrive and have concluded their investigations; and
- report all suspicious people, activity and/or vehicles to police immediately via Triple Zero (000) in an emergency, Policelink (131 444) or anonymously to Crime Stoppers (1800 333 000).
