Beware of scams affecting our community

There have been a couple of recent scams reported locally involving calls from a telecommunication company.

The first involved the caller advising the recipient that their internet was affecting other internet users in the neighbourhood. They were advised that they should purchase an internet security key.

Various personal details were requested for identification purposes along with bank account information. End result – unauthorised transactions from their bank account.

The second scam involved the ‘lucky customer’ being contacted and advised that ‘because they were loyal and always paid their account on time they would receive a monthly discount on their bill’. First warning that the call was not genuine!

Second warning – they were then asked questions that should have been obvious to anyone from the company who was legitimately looking at their account details. Questions such as the value of their monthly bill, whether their mobile phone is included on their account and is it still under contract.

Third warning – the caller lost interest once they were reminded that they should have all of this information in front of them. Interestingly the caller did not hang up when challenged but attempted to prolong the conversation.

Just remember if it seems too good to be true …
